AGENT SINGAPORE” transit (“7/3”) and backstamped with WELTEVREDEM transit (“10/3”) with KLATEN arrival (“13/3”) on the front. Very nice item of mail from Borneo. | $575.00

CW0007 | CRASH & WRECK (ANDRE LEBON): 1918 Cover from Paris to Djember, Java. The steamer “Andre Lebon” dragged anchor during a heavey sqall and grounded on a coral patch near Sultan Shoal Singapore on 7 April 1918. Originally pinned by a brass fastener (included) a note in Dutch which translates “Envelope of a letter carried on the / Andre Lebon / shipwrecked off / Singapore / damaged by sea water / bearing an 1863 postage stamp”. (A postcard showing the Andre Lebon is included with this lot.) Only 3 or 4 examples are recorded of this wreck. Rare. $2250 (US) | $2250.00

Manuscript “Par Avion” 2) Makasser, Celebes, Netherland Indies Netherland Indies Postal Card to the USA. 10ct Postal Stationary Card upgraded with 60c Slate Black tied by MAKASSER cds. (Sent by US Military Officer searching for WWII War Graves The Card contains very graphic details on the work of the War Graves unit. “our work is gruesome. We have to penetrate Jungle and swamps looking for planes. The ones that the Japs got is even worse. Every man caught dead or alive was beheaded and then hacked to pieces. Brother it is a mess. Then we try to identify them and the Japs took all means of identification off of the bodies. We found a mass grave at Balikpapen, Borneo, but the Jap that knew who they were humg himself the same day, so they are unknown.” (One of three covers from this correspondence – also see NB0091 & NB0092). POW019 | AUSTRALIA TO THAILAND (DUTCH EAST INDIES) Cover dated 16th June 1943 to Pte J Rowley 2/3rd Machine Gun Battalion AIF Australian POW Java (Dutch East Indies). The cover is Australian Red Cross has c/o OFFICIAL PRISONERS OF WAR INFORMATION BUREAU totally obliterated and replaced with C/o JAPANESE RED CROSS SOCIETY in red. The contents would have been sent to the Red Cross in Melbourne where this cover was typed, the contents enclosed, and the whole then placed in the mail. There is a Melbourne circular date stamp with a parallel line cancellation. No receipt date is noted. There is a Japanese censor mark in red measuring 18.5mm by 16mm with Ken’etsuzumi (Censored) and an indecipherable seal. The diamond 3 PASSED BY CENSOR 188 in violet is the Australian censor mark with the 3 Opened by Censor resealing tape in red on the reverse. The cover is inscribed OVL 19.1.43 in pencil, indicating he had been sent overland to the southern end of the Thailand-Burma railway via Singapore. This was probably inscribed in Singapore at the BRE, to where the cover had been forwarded. Only the BRE could have known that he was sent overland. (OVL). Sent from a hospital in Bandoeng, it has Bandoeng circular date stamps of 21st March. No arrival marks and no postage paid. | $110.00

POW002 | DUTCH EAST INDIES TO THAILAND: Undated P.O.W. cover from Bali to Miss Godin, Beatrixkamp Nakom Pathon, Siam. This cover was sent after the surrender of the Japanese when Miss Godin appears to have been working in the Beatrixkamp, Nakom Pathon, probably as a nurse. It is from F D Laurens, a 1st Lieutenant in the Dutch Military Police serving in 4th Inf 11 Bali. The return address includes Veldpost te Denpasar (Fieldpost Denpasar) On the top right there is Gadjah Merah (Red Elephant) hand stamp of Denpasar. (Bulterman 466). POWs of the KNIL (Royal Dutch East Indies Army) reorganised and returned to NEI. Their logo was the Red Elephant located in Denpasar and Palembang. The cover is marked ON ACTIVE SERVICE and AIRMAIL, It has NX3 written on in orange crayon and Bea (Beatrix) in pencil. It was probably handled by the Dutch Post Office in Bangkok set up briefly after the war to handle mail to and from ex POWs. | $285.00
